Best Tinder Openers (Tested on Real Matches, Ranked by Replies)

Alex next to a Tinder chat that opens with "So I guess we're dating now", with the caption "Tinder openers"

You finally match with her. You type “Hey”, delete it. Type something clever, delete that too. Ten minutes later you send “Hey, how’s your week going?” … and she never replies.

Most Tinder openers are garbage. Guys either send something so boring she has nothing to say back, or they try way too hard with a pickup line she’s already seen 20 times today.

So instead of guessing, we tested it. We sent different first messages to real Tinder matches and tracked how many girls replied to each one. Below you’ll see the openers ranked by reply rate, real screenshots, and what to send once she answers so it actually turns into a date.

Alex is the founder of Playing With Fire (230k+ YouTube subscribers) and creator of FireTexts, an AI texting assistant that writes openers and replies for you.

What makes a good Tinder opener?

Don’t fall for the idea that some magical line is going to get you laid. Your opener has one job: get her to reply.

Hot girls have a lot of matches. When she opens Tinder, she’s scrolling past a wall of “hey” and “hi beautiful.” Your first message just needs to:

  • Stand out. Anything but “hey.”
  • Be easy to answer. She shouldn’t have to think hard.
  • Make her curious. The best openers make her think “wait, what does he mean?”

That’s it. Short, playful, a little intriguing. Your profile does the rest. If it isn’t doing its job, fix that first, because no opener saves a bad profile.

The best Tinder openers (ranked by reply rate)

Here’s every opener we tested, sent to 15 matches each:

Opener Replies
“Hey [her name], you know what’s interesting about your pictures?” 13/15 (86%)
“So, I guess we’re dating now?” 12/15 (80%)
“Can I be honest?” / “You’re just my type” 12/15 (80%)
“Hey nerd” 10/15 (66%)
“Hey, I’m the one! You can delete this app now ;)” 10/15 (66%)
“My 3rd grade crush was named [her name]. I used to pull her hair and steal her crayons” 9/15 (60%)
“How does this work? Are we married now?” 8/15 (53%)
“Hey future lover” 7/15 (46%)
“When life gives you [her name], make lemonade” 6/15 (40%)
“Hey trouble” 4/15 (26%)

Keep in mind 15 girls per opener is a small sample, so don’t treat 86% vs 80% like it’s science. What matters is the pattern: the top openers all create curiosity or assume you two are already a thing. Let’s break down the best ones.

1) “Hey [her name], you know what’s interesting about your pictures?”

The highest reply rate we got. It’s pure curiosity: she has to know what you noticed.

The catch: you need a good answer ready. If your follow-up is “you’re really pretty,” you just wasted the best opener on the list and handed her a bunch of validation for free. Pick something specific and tease her about it. For example:

Him: Hey [her name], you know what’s interesting about your pictures?
Her: no what??
Him: You’re smiling in every single one except the one with the cat. Trouble in paradise?

That’s why I rate this one “use at your own risk.” It gets replies, but only works if you know where you’re taking it.

2) “So, I guess we’re dating now?”

This one tied for the second-highest reply rate, and it’s the one I’d start with. It’s obviously exaggerated, so any girl with a sense of humor will play along.

Tinder chat: he opens with "So I guess we're dating now", she replies "Okay" and "Ah can we get a dog?"

Look at her reply. She didn’t just answer, she jumped straight into the roleplay: “Ah can we get a dog?” Now you’ve got an easy conversation going. Where you’re living, who’s walking the dog, who does the cooking, meeting the parents. The possibilities are endless.

3) “Can I be honest?” → “You’re just my type”

This is a two-parter. “Can I be honest?” is pure clickbait, and girls can’t resist finding out what you’re about to say. The problem is most guys don’t know where to take it after she says “sure.”

The safe follow-up: “You’re just my type.”

Tinder chat: he opens with "Can I be honest?", she says "Sure", he says "You're just my type", she asks "What is it about me that makes me 'just your type'"

Notice what happened. She asked “What is it about me that makes me ‘just your type’?” Now she’s the one chasing the answer. Point out something specific from her pictures (her style, her smile, the fact she’s clearly a dog person) and keep it playful.

Important: don’t use “Can I be honest?” if you don’t have a follow-up planned. And whatever you do, don’t use it to say something sexual to a girl you’ve never spoken to. Tinder will ban you without a second thought if she reports you.

4) “Hey nerd”

A little neg, and way better than “hey, how are you?”. She’ll want to know why you called her a nerd.

Tinder chat: he opens with "Hey nerd", she replies "How you know I'm a nerd 😉"

From there you can tease her about something in her photos, or flip it: you’re a nerd too, so you can spot one. Just make sure your profile backs you up, so it reads as playful and not insecure.

5) “Hey, I’m the one! You can delete this app now ;)”

A bit corny, but cocky in a fun way. You’re telling her the search is over.

Tinder chat: he opens with "Hey, I'm the one! you can delete this app now", she replies "Then, i will take the risk :)" and "You seem like a good person haha, and handsome too"

She played along and complimented him back. If a girl doesn’t get the humor, no big deal. Move on to the next match.

Tinder openers to stop using

❌ “Hey trouble”

This used to be our trademark Playing With Fire opener. It’s been around so long that girls are now immune to it. 4 out of 15 replies. Retire it.

❌ “Hey future lover” and “Are we married now?”

Same idea as “So, I guess we’re dating now?”, but they landed a lot worse. They come across more corny and pickup-line-y.

Tinder chat: he opens with "how does this work? are we married now?", she replies "Yes" and "Wanna come over proofreading my vows?"

When it works, it works (she wanted him to proofread her vows 😂). But only about half the girls replied, so stick with “dating now.”

❌ “Hey” / “Hi beautiful” / “How’s your week going?”

Not tested, because we didn’t need to. It’s what every other guy sends, it gives her nothing to play with, and even if she replies you’re stuck making small talk. If that’s all you got back, here’s what to text after hey.

❌ A cheesy pickup line

Lines from Google that she’s seen a hundred times make you look like every other guy. If you want lines that actually work, I tested a whole set in my best Tinder pick up lines guide.

What to say after she replies

Getting the reply is step one. This is where most Tinder conversations die, because the guy switches straight into interview mode.

❌ Wasting the reply

Him: So, I guess we’re dating now?
Her: haha okay 😂 can we get a dog?
Him: Haha sure. So what do you do for work?

✅ Staying in the frame

Him: So, I guess we’re dating now?
Her: haha okay 😂 can we get a dog?
Him: Only if you’re doing the 6am walks. I’m not a morning person

Why this works:

  • You stayed in the playful roleplay she just bought into
  • You’re already talking about the two of you like it’s a thing (the we-frame)
  • It’s fun to reply to, so she keeps investing

Keep it going for a few messages, and once she’s laughing and replying fast, move it toward a date. Something like: “Ok, before we commit to a dog we should probably meet. Drinks Thursday?” Here’s the full process in how to ask a girl out over text. And if things start to slow down, read how to keep a text conversation going.

Using Hinge as well? The openers there work a bit differently, because you send them with your like. Here are the best Hinge openers.

Stuck on what to send? Let FireTexts write your Tinder opener

The openers above work. But the best opener is still one that fits her: what’s in her photos, what’s in her bio. And the follow-up after “you know what’s interesting about your pictures?” only works if you actually have something good to say. That’s exactly why I built FireTexts.

FireTexts is an AI texting assistant for iPhone and Android:

  1. Openers from her profile. Upload her photos and it writes custom opening lines based on what’s in them, so you never have to send “hey.”
  2. Replies when you’re stuck. Screenshot your Tinder conversation, hit generate, and it suggests replies that keep things playful and moving toward the date.
  3. Pick one that sounds like you, copy it, and send.

Openers FireTexts wrote from a match's profile photos

It reads the whole conversation, not just her last message, so the replies actually make sense:

Tinder opener mistakes to avoid

❌ Writing a paragraph

Nobody reads an essay from a stranger. One line, two at most.

❌ Complimenting her looks

“You’re gorgeous” puts her on a pedestal and gives her nothing to say back except “thanks.” If you compliment her, make it about something she chose, like her style or something in her bio.

❌ Going sexual straight away

You haven’t even said hi yet. Start playful, build some tension, and only escalate when she’s matching your energy. You don’t go from 0 to 60, and getting reported is a fast way to get banned.

❌ Waiting days to message

The longer you wait after matching, the colder she gets. Send your opener while the match is fresh.

❌ Double texting when she doesn’t reply

If she doesn’t answer, don’t follow up with “??” an hour later. Give it a couple of days, then try one fresh, playful message. If you’re getting a lot of matches and few replies, read why girls stop texting back.

FAQ

What is the best opener on Tinder?

In our test, “Hey [her name], you know what’s interesting about your pictures?” got the highest reply rate (13 out of 15). “So, I guess we’re dating now?” and “Can I be honest?” followed by “You’re just my type” were right behind at 12 out of 15.

What should my first message on Tinder be?

Short, playful, and easy to reply to. Something that makes her curious, like “So, I guess we’re dating now?”, works better than “hey” or a cheesy pickup line.

Do pickup lines work on Tinder?

Most don’t, because she’s seen them before. Playful, slightly bold openers that fit your profile work much better than lines copied from the internet.

Should I use her name in my opener?

It helps. It shows you actually looked at her profile instead of sending the same message to everyone, and our top opener uses it.

What do I say after she replies to my opener?

Stay in the playful frame she just bought into, keep it fun for a few messages, then suggest meeting up. Don’t switch into interview questions like “what do you do for work?”.

Can AI write Tinder openers?

Yes. FireTexts writes custom openers from her profile photos and suggests replies from a screenshot of your conversation, so you always know what to send.
