Best Hinge Openers (Tested Lines That Actually Get Matches)

Alex next to a Hinge matches screen, with the caption "Best openers"

You like her photo. Maybe you even type out something clever on her prompt. Then… nothing. No match, no reply, and you’re left wondering if Hinge is broken or if it’s you.

Here’s the thing most guys get wrong: on Hinge, your opener does two jobs. It has to get her to match with you, and then it has to get her to actually reply. Most guys blow both by overthinking it.

In this guide I’ll show you the Hinge openers that performed best in a real experiment, the ones I’d use after you match, and what to say once she replies so it turns into a date.

Why Hinge is different

I recently asked my YouTube community which dating app has worked best for them. Hinge took the #1 spot with 34% of 848 votes, ahead of Tinder and Bumble.

YouTube community poll: Hinge 34%, Other 27%, Tinder 24%, Bumble 15% out of 848 votes

A big reason is how Hinge is built:

  • There’s no swiping. You like a specific photo or prompt, and you can send a comment with your like. That comment is your opener.
  • Free users only get 8 likes a day. Hot girls almost never pay for dating apps, so she can’t match with every guy like she can on Tinder.
  • Hinge limits unanswered chats. If she has too many matches waiting on her reply, she can’t send new likes until she answers or ends some of them. So girls on Hinge tend to be more responsive.

Bottom line: every like counts more on Hinge, and so does what you send with it.

Always send a message with your like

This is the single biggest thing you can change today.

One of the guys in my mastermind ran a controlled Hinge experiment to test what actually gets more matches. Sending any message with your like nearly doubled his match rate compared to sending a plain like.

Let that sink in. If you’re liking profiles without a comment, you’re leaving half your matches on the table. You don’t need a genius line. Just send something.

Two more things that experiment found:

  • Paying helped a lot. A Hinge subscription roughly doubled the match rate compared to the free version.
  • Custom openers didn’t clearly beat simple ones. I’m a bit skeptical of this one (we don’t know exactly what custom lines were used), but it tells you something important: you don’t need to write a novel about her prompt.

I break down the full experiment on Playing With Fire: how to get more matches on Hinge.

The best Hinge openers to send with your like

These were the top-performing lines in that experiment, in order. Send them as the comment on her photo or prompt.

1) “Should I be jealous?”

The #1 performer. Use it on a photo where she’s with a guy, a dog, a celebrity cutout, a pizza, anything. It’s playful, it assumes you two are already a thing, and she has to reply to explain.

2) “Your pics caught my attention… this kept it.”

Send it as a comment on one of her prompts. It’s a compliment, but a non-needy one: you’re telling her that her personality is what sold you, not just her looks.

3) “You may be just my type 🙂”

Simple and confident. The “may be” is key. You’re not putting her on a pedestal, you’re still deciding.

4) “Can I be honest?”

Pure curiosity. Most girls can’t resist finding out what you’re about to say. Just make sure you know where you’re taking it before you send it, otherwise you waste the opening. A safe follow-up is something playful about one of her photos.

Notice what these have in common. They’re not funny. They’re not clever. They’re not trying to impress her. They make her think “wait, what does he mean by that?” That curiosity is what gets you the match and the reply.

Hinge openers to send after you match

Sometimes she likes you first, or you matched without a comment. Now you need a first message. These are lines we tested on real matches on Tinder, ranked by how many girls replied. They work just as well on Hinge.

Opener Replies
“So, I guess we’re dating now?” 12/15 (80%)
“You’re just my type” 12/15 (80%)
“Hey nerd” 10/15 (66%)
“Hey, I’m the one! You can delete this app now ;)” 10/15 (66%)
“Hey trouble” 4/15 (26%)

A few notes:

  • “So, I guess we’re dating now?” is obviously exaggerated. A girl with a sense of humor will play along, and it rolls straight into a roleplay: meeting the parents, who does the cooking, where the honeymoon is.
  • “Hey nerd” is a little neg, and she’ll want to know why you said it. Make sure your profile backs you up, so it reads as playful, not insecure.
  • “Hey trouble” used to be our trademark opener. It’s been around so long that girls are now immune to it. Retire it.

How to comment on her Hinge prompts

Her prompts are free material. The mistake most guys make is answering them like a job interview.

❌ The boring comment

Her prompt: My most irrational fear… “Geese”
Him: Haha, why geese?

She’s heard it 40 times today. Nothing to play with.

✅ The better comment

Her prompt: My most irrational fear… “Geese”
Him: Should I be worried you’ll leave me for a goose sanctuary?

Why this works:

  • It takes her answer and teases her with it, instead of asking her to explain it
  • It puts the two of you in a scene together (the we-frame), like you’re already dating
  • It’s easy and fun to reply to

A simple formula: take her answer, exaggerate it, and make it about the two of you.

Same goes for your own prompts. One of mine, “A shower thought I recently had: You don’t even want to know 😈”, gets girls opening me all the time, because they have to know what it is. That’s curiosity doing the work for you. (More on that in my guide to Hinge prompts.)

What to say after she replies

Getting the reply is only step one. This is where a lot of Hinge conversations die, because the guy goes straight into interview mode.

❌ Wasting her reply

Him: Should I be jealous?
Her: lol of my dog?? 😂
Him: Haha yeah. So what do you do for work?

✅ Keeping it flirty

Him: Should I be jealous?
Her: lol of my dog?? 😂
Him: He clearly gets more of your attention than I do. I’ll need to meet him and see what I’m up against

Why this works:

  • You stayed in the playful frame she just bought into
  • “Meet him” plants the idea of meeting up, without asking her out yet
  • She’s now investing in the convo, and that’s when you set the date

Once she’s laughing and replying fast, strike while the iron is hot and move it toward a plan. Here’s exactly how in my guide on how to ask a girl out over text, and if things start to slow down, check out how to keep a text conversation going.

If she throws you a test like “you probably say that to every girl,” don’t get defensive. Stay playful. That’s a shit test, and passing it is attractive.

Stuck on what to send? Let FireTexts write your Hinge opener

The lines above work. But the best opener is still one that fits her: her photos, her prompts, her vibe. And coming up with that for every single profile gets old fast. That’s exactly why I built FireTexts.

FireTexts is an AI texting assistant for iPhone and Android:

  1. Openers from her profile. Upload her photos and it writes custom opening lines based on what’s in them, so you never have to send “hey.”
  2. Replies when you’re stuck. Screenshot your Hinge conversation, hit generate, and it suggests replies that keep things playful and moving toward the date.
  3. Pick one that sounds like you, copy it, and send.

Openers FireTexts wrote from a match's profile photos

It reads the whole conversation, not just her last message, so the replies actually make sense:

Hinge opener mistakes to avoid

❌ Sending a plain like

We covered this, but it’s worth repeating: a like with no message gets roughly half the matches. Always add a comment.

❌ Writing a paragraph

Nobody reads a wall of text from a stranger. One line. Two at most.

❌ Complimenting her looks

“You’re gorgeous” is what every guy sends. It puts her on a pedestal and gives her nothing to reply to. If you compliment her, compliment something she chose, like her prompt or her style.

❌ Going sexual too soon

Hinge is the most relationship-oriented of the big apps. Start playful, build some tension, and only escalate when she’s matching your energy. You don’t go from 0 to 60.

❌ Answering her prompt literally

If she says her ideal Sunday is brunch, “I love brunch too” is dead on arrival. Tease, exaggerate, or turn it into a plan: “Bottomless or are you a one-mimosa lightweight?”

FAQ

What is the best opener on Hinge?

In the experiment I covered above, “Should I be jealous?” got the most matches, followed by “Your pics caught my attention… this kept it.” and “You may be just my type 🙂”. They all work because they spark curiosity.

Should you send a message with a like on Hinge?

Yes, every time. Sending a message with your like nearly doubled the match rate in that experiment.

Should you comment on her photo or her prompt?

Either works. Comment on a photo for quick, playful lines like “Should I be jealous?”. Comment on a prompt when you can tease her answer or turn it into a plan.

What should I say after she matches on Hinge?

React to whatever she said, keep it playful, and move toward a date while she’s invested. Don’t switch into interview questions.

Is Hinge better than Tinder?

For a lot of guys, yes. It took the #1 spot in my community poll, and girls on Hinge tend to be more responsive. That said, you should never rely on just one app.

Can AI write Hinge openers?

Yes. FireTexts writes custom openers from her profile photos and suggests replies from a screenshot of your conversation, so you always know what to send.
